If you’ve never stepped inside the Rivermont Mansion at dusk, imagine a scene from a classic film: warm lamps glowing, carved wood everywhere, and that stained-glass dome sprinkling color across the room. Rivermont Collegiate’s annual fundraiser brought all of that—and then some. Nights like this are why I love event photography in Bettendorf, Iowa: generous people, gorgeous details, and a story you can feel in every frame.

That First Step Through the Door

I arrived a little early to breathe in the space (photographer habit). You learn a lot in the first five minutes—where the light pools, how guests flow through the rooms, which corners give you the best layers for candids. The cocktail tables were dressed simply—black linens, gold votives, fall florals—and it set the tone: elegant but comfortable. My goal? Blend in, read the room, and catch the laughter before it bursts.

Great event photos aren’t about pulling people into poses—they’re about anticipation. I watch eyes, shoulders, and hands. Someone leans in, a joke lands, and there’s that half-second when the smile turns into a laugh. That’s the sweet spot. I moved between doorways and corners, using the décor as foreground to frame little pockets of conversation.

The Room with the Stained-Glass Sky

I’m not dramatic (okay, maybe a little), but the stained-glass dome is a showstopper. It softens the light and adds a subtle warmth you can’t fake. I shot wide to tell the story of the space, then tight to let the color and texture take over. If you’re planning an elegant couple’s session, this is the spot. Twinkle Lights, Textures & a Pumpkin Tree

Good décor does half the storytelling for you. The team layered twinkle lights, soft tulle, and fall accents so the auction tables felt festive without stealing the show. My favorite touch? The whimsical pumpkin tree—playful, on-theme, and a total conversation starter.

A Chef Who Paints with Ingredients

One of the Quad Cities’ finest chefs catered the night, and it showed. I love photographing food that’s plated with intention—color, height, texture. It gives you energy between moments and photographs like still-life art.

This is where I switch to longer lenses and shoot through foreground to keep the images intimate without interrupting the moment.
