Fun engagement photo ideas are the ones that actually feel like you. They do not have to be stiff, overly formal, or done in just one location. Your engagement session can feel like a date night, a favorite activity, a sweet treat, a sunset walk, or a little bit of everything.
For Skylar and Skylar’s Davenport, Iowa engagement session, we did exactly that. We started with a cozy diner vibe, headed to the arcade for colorful and playful photos, and ended the evening outside in a flower field by the water for more romantic, timeless portraits.
And yes, their names are both Skylar. Same name, same hair color, and totally meant to be.

A Fun Engagement Session That Felt Like a Date Night
Skylar and Skylar had never had professional photos taken before, so there were definitely a few nerves at the beginning. That is completely normal. Most couples tell me they feel awkward in front of the camera at first, which is why I love starting sessions with something simple and natural.
Instead of jumping straight into formal poses, we started in a diner booth with dessert. They ordered the cutest brookie sundae tower with a cherry on top, and it was honestly such a perfect little aesthetic dessert moment. It gave them something to do with their hands, something to laugh about, and a sweet way to settle into the session.
I gave them fun prompts, had them chat with each other, share dessert, and just be themselves. Pretty quickly, the nerves started to fade and the session began to feel less like “we are taking engagement photos” and more like “we are on a cute date and someone happens to be documenting it.”

Arcade Engagement Photos for Couples Who Want to Have Fun
After the diner, we headed to the arcade, which was perfect for Skylar and Skylar because they both love arcades. This part of the session was all about movement, laughter, and letting them play.
They jumped right into games, ran around together, and laughed the whole time. At one point, a stranger even gifted them cotton candy, which made the night feel even more like a real date. It was one of those unexpected little moments that made the session feel even more personal.
The arcade was also one of my favorite parts creatively. I loved getting to play with the neon lighting, the colors, and the motion blur. The arcade photos had so much energy, and they brought out the fun side of their relationship in a way that traditional posing never could.

Can You Mix Fun Engagement Photos With Traditional Portraits?
Absolutely. In fact, I think this session is the perfect example of why mixing both styles works so well.
Skylar and Skylar wanted photos that showed the fun in their relationship, but they also wanted some traditional engagement photos they could use for their wedding invitations. So after the diner and arcade, we slowed things down and headed outside.
We found a beautiful flower field by the water, and it was the perfect spot to let them cuddle up and get those more intimate, timeless images. After all the playful energy from the arcade, this part of the session felt calm, romantic, and soft.
That variety is one of my favorite things about doing multiple locations. You get the candid, playful photos that feel like your personality, and you also get the romantic portraits that will always feel classic.

Engagement Photos for Wedding Invitations
One of the reasons Skylar and Skylar reached out was because they needed engagement photos for their wedding invitations quickly. Their wedding is coming up this August, so we made sure to create a gallery that gave them plenty of options for invitations, prints, and memories from this season.
For their timeline, I was able to offer a three-day turnaround so they could get their invitations out in time. I know wedding planning can move fast, and it meant so much that I could help them document this season and get them the photos they needed.
I am so excited for these two as they get ready for their August wedding, and I truly wish them all the best.

Fun Engagement Photo Ideas for Couples
Your engagement session should feel like the two of you. If you are trying to think of fun engagement photo ideas, start by asking what you already love doing together.
Maybe that is going to an arcade, grabbing dessert, walking by the water, getting coffee, playing games, visiting your favorite bar, cooking together, walking your dog, or going somewhere meaningful to your relationship.
The best engagement photos usually happen when you feel comfortable enough to be yourselves. That might mean running around an arcade, sharing a sundae in a diner booth, cuddling in a flower field, or doing all three in one session.
Skylar and Skylar’s gallery felt candid, romantic, and playful, which is exactly why I loved it so much. It was not one single vibe. It told more of their story.
